PRINCESS ANNE - Freshman pitcher
Krystian Negron tossed a complete game leading the Eagles to a 3-1 victory in their MEAC opener on the road against Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, March 19
th at Hawks Stadium.
Coppin State's (3-14, 1-1) Negron picked up his first collegiate victory striking out four Hawks (5-14, 1-1) while only surrendering four hits. At the plate, junior infielder
Bryant Miranda hammered out three hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Senior outfielder
George Dragon had two hits along with a pair of RBIs.
The Eagles took a 2-0 advantage after the first inning of play. Senior outfielder
John Kraft got things going drawing a walk putting a runner on base. Kraft proceeded to steal second base and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by the UMES defense. He later scored on a groundout by freshman infielder
Jamar Criss giving CSU the early lead (1-0).
Bryant Miranda singled to shortstop for the Eagles and also picked up a stolen base. Next,
George Dragon followed with an RBI single sending Miranda home gicing the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
UMES managed to score one run in the third inning but the Eagles remained ahead, 2-1. In the fourth inning Coppin State extended their lead with and RBI double to left field by
George Dragon. Miranda scored the go ahead run after leading the inning off with a single to left field (3-1).
Coppin State used their defense to hold the Hawks scoreless for six straight innings cruising to their second consecutive win. The Eagles won 3-1 in the first game of a double header against Maryland Eastern Shore.
In game two Maryland Eastern Shore came from behind with three late runs downing the Eagles 4-3. Coppin State led 3-0 after the second inning but UMES battles back for the win at home.
Pitcher
Aaron Rea went six innings, struck out two batters, and walked only one Hawk. Relief pitcher
John Kraft was inserted into the game in the final inning and was issued the loss for the Eagles.
Freshman Nazier McIlwain knocked in a two-RBI single to right field giving the Eagles an early lead.
Erik Crossman and
John Kraft each scored for Coppin State after both drew walks at the plate. In the second inning
Colin Dower led off with a single to right field and crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
UMES trailed 3-0 after the second inning and then proceeded to chip away at the lead eventually tying the game at 3-3 after the sixth inning. The Hawks loaded the bases and then singled to right field for the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. In game two UMES outhit the Eagles 8-2 in their come from behind win.
The third game of the weekend series between the Eagles and Hawks has been postponed from Sunday, March 20
th to a later date that has not been determined yet. CSU heads to Towson on Tuesday, March 22
nd for a single game scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
