Smith Leads Eagles with Multi-Hit Performance Against UMBC

Box Score BALTIMORE- Senior infielder Danielle Smith led the Lady Eagles with two hits and one run scored in Coppin State's game against the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday, March 13 at UMBC Softball Stadium in Baltimore.
 
The Eagles had totaled four hits in the game.
 
Danielle Smith led the game off with a single to right center. Freshman infielder Melanie Benge followed with a single to third base on a bunt.
 
UMBC surged ahead with five run on four hits to take a 5-0 lead to end the bottom of the first inning.
 
Freshman Alisha Esqueda reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman and advanced to second base.
 
Esqueda scored on a junior infielder Taylor Haller RBI double to right field.
 
The Retrievers added three runs on four hits at the bottom if the second inning and three more runs on two hits as they pushed to an 11-1 lead at the end of the third inning.
 
It would be UMBC's final run of the game.
 
Danielle Smith doubled to right center in the top of the fifth inning for her second hit of the game.
 
She would go on to score on a wild pitch for the Lady Eagles last run of the contest.
 
The Lady Eagles fell to the UMBC Retrievers, 11-2.
 
Freshman pitcher Dakota Gartell threw 3.0 innings and struck out one batter.
 
Coppin State will return to action for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road weekend series against Norfolk State. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, March 19 with the first game beginning at 1:00 p.m. and a single game Sunday, March 20 beginning at noon. All games will be played at NSU Softball Complex in Norfolk, VA.
