BALTIMORE – Junior
Danielle Smith extended her hitting streak to 16 games during Coppin State's 7-5 and 7-0 doubleheader losses to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Norfolk State Thursday afternoon at the CSU Softball Complex.
Smith led the Eagles (3-26 overall, 3-8 MEAC) with two hits, two runs and a pair of RBIs. She finished the first game by blasting a two-run homer over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the fifth in the second game, Smith ruined a perfect game for NSU's pitcher Liz Riley with a single up the middle.
For the season, Smith is hitting .369 and leads Coppin State with 31 hits and five home runs. During her hitting streak, Smith has eight multi-hit games.
Juniors
Shelby Mendoza and
Alanna Williams along with senior
Samantha Denlinger also had hits for Coppin State in the opening game. Williams and Denlinger combined for three RBIs to put the Eagles on the board, but it all started with Mendoza, who singled down the right line in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With one out, Williams punched one through the middle and advanced to second on the throw, pushing senior
Candice Van Horn to third and allowing Mendoza to score. Denlinger followed with a single up the middle that allowed Van Horn and Williams to score.
The Spartans (11-22, 10-4) were paced by Whitney Williams and Alina Moriarty. Williams posted five hits, four RBIs and four runs. Moriarty added five hits, four runs and two RBIs to the mix.
Coppin State will close its three-game series against Norfolk State Friday at noon.
