BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped its home opener in a doubleheader to Delaware State Sunday afternoon at the CSU Softball Field by scores of 14-5 and 20-4.
Junior
Danielle Smith led the way for the Eagles (3-20 overall, 3-5 MEAC) with four hits, two runs and four RBIs on the day. She finished with a .800 batting average.
Smith is currently on a 10-game hitting streak. She started off the second game with a double to left field for her third straight game with an extra base hit.

Alanna Williams added three hits to stat sheet while classmate Lauren Rogers had two runs and hit.
To start out the day, the Eagles loaded the bases thanks to three consecutive walks at the bottom of the second inning. Smith took advantage, hitting a three-run triple off the left field wall to give Coppin State a 3-0 lead.
The Hornets (9-21, 3-4) quickly tied things at 3-3 in the top of the third before going up 5-3 in the fourth.
Coppin State bounced back in the bottom of the fourth inning and knotted the game at 5-5 as senior
Candice Van Horn reached second on an error by DSU's shortstop that led to two runs for the Eagles.
In the second outing, Coppin State made its last chance count. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Smith's patience at the plate earned her a walk, allowing Rogers to score.
Next up to bat was freshman
Tanysha Tennassee, who waited on the perfect pitch to punch in a three-run double to centerfield.
Jordan Stamps went six for seven with three home runs, seven RBIs and a double to pace the Hornets.
Both squads will meet tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for the final match of the three-game series.
