BALTIMORE – The Coppin State baseball team makes its second trip to the state capitol for another game against Navy at Max Bishop Stadium on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference matchup.
The Eagles (1-19 overall) lost 20-1 in their first meeting against Navy (20-9) on Feb. 25.
In that contest,
Jonathan Calvin had two hits and scored for Coppin State. Calvin has both of his career multi-hit games against Navy. Jack Kraft and
Randal Mendez also had hits for the Eagles. Also in that game, Coppin State pitchers
Jhar Devilme, Yayha Muhammed and
Jesse Kraft combined for eight strikeouts.
Both teams went extra innings in their last outings. Coppin State lost 6-5 to Norfolk State in 11 innings. Navy swept Bucknell, 2-1, in 10 innings and 6-5 in 14 innings. Overall, Navy enters the game having won four straight games, including 15 of 19 at home.
Coppin State has been paced lately by the sizzling bats of
Darien Percell and
George Dragon.
Percell, who has an eight-game hitting streak, raised his overall batting average by 63 points. He is the Eagles' second leading hitter, batting a cool .324 on the season. He is one of two Coppin State players hitting over .300 on the season.
Dragon is sixth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in batting with a .355 average. For the season, he leads the Eagles with 27 hits. Dragon has reached base in every game this season and has at least one hit in 14 of the Eagles' last 15 games. He has a current six-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .500 (13-for-26)
Offensively against Bucknell, Sean Trent, Brad Borosak and Connor Deneen led the Midshipmen's attack with 10 combined hits over 31 at bats. Trent recorded a team-high four hits, while Deneen led Navy with three RBIs. For the season, Trent leads Navy with a .407 batting average. Other hitting threats for Navy are Robert Currie (.346) and Ben Lowe (.317).
In the earlier win over Coppin State, Navy had 19 hits, eight of which went for extra bases. Adrian Chinnery and Brad Borosak led the Midshipmen with four hits each.
The Eagles begin a weekend series against first place UMES at Joe Cannon Stadium this weekend.
