MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The Coppin State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Saint Bonaventure by identical 8-1 scores in a non-conference contest at Big Rock Stadium Thursday.
The Eagles fell to 1-7 overall despite Jack Kraft extending his season-opening hit streak to eight games, with a single in each contest.
In an oddity – much like the doubleheader having identical scores –
George Dragon and
Colin Dower teamed up to score both of Coppin State's runs on the afternoon. In the opening game, Dragon's double in the third inning scored Dower. In the nightcap, Dower scored on Dragon's first inning single to tie the game at 1-1.
Dragon was one of three CSU players to have a pair of hits in the second game. Also enjoying multiple-hit efforts were
Jeffrey Fitch and
Randal Mendez. Dragon has reached base in every game this season for Coppin State.
William Brown, who doubled in the opening game, drew a pair of walks in the nightcap.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Joe Cannon Stadium, but the field wasn't ready yet, which forced the Bonnies and Eagles to travel to North Carolina. This was the Eagles' second trip to the Tar Heel state in five days. They split a doubleheader against Army last Saturday in Kinston.
St. Bonaventure (7-2 overall) extended its winning streak to five games. Thad Johnson went 3-8 on the day with a run and three RBIs to lead the Bonnies, who are off to their best start in 10 years.
Coppin State is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when it opens its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule against rival Maryland Eastern Shore on the road in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The three-game set concludes Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
