CSU Softball hopes to find its footing

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team closed out the weekend at the Aggie Invitational.

The Eagles (0-9) met St. Francis and tournament host North Carolina A&T twice over the three-day tournament and dropped each decision.

"Once again, we faced a top quality team with St. Francis," senior pitcher/first baseman Samantha Denlinger said. "We tried to correct our mistakes on our second day that we made the first day of competition, especially defensively. It was nice to see where we stand against other MEAC competitors, such as N.C. A&T."

Coppin State has improved since it opened the season last week, scoring in each of its four games.

The weekend started out with a RBI triple from Kimberlynn Brown against St. Francis. The Eagles were even better later in the day against N.C. A&T. Lauren Rogers was an offensive power house, putting one over the fence to tie the game in the second inning. She reached base during each of her three times at bat and punched in a two-out single in the fifth.  Candice Van Horn also scored twice for Coppin State.

The Eagles opened Saturday with N.C. A&T, where Van Horn had a run batted in on 1-for-2 hitting. When Coppin State faced St. Francis for the second time, Danielle Smith smashed a two-run homer over center field. Oashaja Dobie added a two-run single to the mix.

"We improved offensively this week," Denlinger said. "Improving each time we play is always our goal."

Although Coppin State is making strides in the right direction, it's clear that some improvements will take more time.

"Right now, our biggest obstacle as a team is learning how to work as a collective unit instead of as individual players. We must fix our mistakes and use the games we have played as learning tools for conference play."

The Eagles will have the week off and return to action on Friday, Feb. 27 in the Adidas Tournament hosted by Winthrop University.
