DURHAM, N.C. – Coppin State's
Solomon Hammond won the 200m dash and led the 4x100m Relay to victory at the Duke Invitational over the weekend at Morris Williams Stadium.
A senior from Ghana, Hammond clocked a 20.94 in the 200m dash and ran the second leg of the Relay that finished in 40.17. Hammond also took second overall, and first among collegiate runners, in the 100m dash with a time of 10.29. He ranks first in the MEAC this season in both the 100m and 4x100m Relay and second in the 200m despite topping the leader in the 200m head-to-head at Duke.
Christopher Adekoya and
Cole Schlotterbeck, who joined Hammond in the Relay, also qualified for the finals of the 100m dash and took fourth and sixth in times of 10.51 and 10.58, respectively. Schlotterbeck also recorded a 21.45 in the 200m dash.
Timothy Frederick was the final leg of the 4x100m Relay and also clocked a 21.23 in the 200m and doubled up in the 400m (47.54), edging out teammate
Godspower Iloba (48.60).
Frederick and Iloba ran the final two legs of the 4x400m Relay that closed the Meet with a sixth-place time of 3:12.08.
Damien Howard and
Philip Gray ran the first two legs of the relay.
The trio of
Asa Francis, Humed Nura and
Elijah Williams also ran season-best times in their respective events. Francis clocked a 1:51.87 in the 800m, Nura ran a 3:59.87 in the 1,500m and the freshman, Williams, covered the 110m hurdles in 14.28 to rank second in CSU history behind All-American Aaron Lewis.
Alexander Dobson-Honablue doubled in the triple jump and javelin. The senior from Baltimore leaped 14.95m (49' 0.75") in the triple jump to record a personal record and threw the javelin 47.10m (154' 6").
Keyon Jackson also competed in the triple jump, covering 13.69m (44' 11").
On the women's side,
Danielle Wooten led a trio of Eagles in the 400m with a season-best time of 57.65, ahead of
Benidicta Kwartemaa (58.71) and
Kyah La Fortune (59.21). Kwartemaa and La Fortune joined
Zeana Bain and
Gifty Oku to a time of 46.56 in the 4x100m Relay.
The Eagles also sent a squad to the Bison Classic, hosted by Howard and Gallaudet University.
Mandel Edelin tripled up in the long jump (6.10m/20' 0.25"), triple jump (12.80m/42' 0") and 100m (11.56). In the sprints,
Elijah Hicks took second in the 400m (50.47) while
Rashawn Harris covered the 800m in 2:01.78.
Jaidyn Brown also cleared 1.80m (5' 10.75") in the high jump.
Ariell Thomas doubled up in the 100m hurdles, where she finished third in 15.03, and 200m dash (26.07).
Paula Orusede finished just behind her in the hurdles, taking fifth in 15.45.
Chase Cineas also clocked a 1:02.20 in the 400m dash.
In the throws,
Raniya Perry led a contingent of Eagles in the shot put (34' 9.5") and also threw the discus (95' 10").
Blair Griffith tosses the shot put, 30' 3.5" and the hammer, 86' 4". Also, in the shot put,
Antonnise Codner's toss traveled, 28' 11.25," with
Dream Wilson also competing (21' 9").
Next weekend, the Eagles will compete at the Morgan State Legacy on April 17-18.
