PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coppin State's
Humed Nura took the individual title at the UMES Soaring Hawks Invite on Saturday morning on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Eagles' men's team took second in the team standings behind the Hawks and just ahead of crosstown rival, Morgan State.
A junior from Baltimore, Nura finished the 8K (5-mile) course in 27:53.5, 12 seconds ahead of UMES' Siyabonga Bongani. Nura is the first CSU men's cross country winner to win an individual title since
Andre Thomas won the DSU Hornet Invitational #2 on October 13, 2012.
Also finishing in the top ten were
Asa Francis in seventh at 29:42.0 and
Etiam Torgbenu, who placed ninth in 31:36.3. Rounding out the top five for the Eagles were
Whisper Shikwa (32:07.8) and
Elijah Hicks (33:33.1).
The women's team finished fourth in the team standings, and were paced by
Tracey Riley and
Gifty Oku, who came in back-to-back at 24:52.6 and 24:55.0, respectively.
Halutie Hor came in next at 26:19.8, followed by
Kyah La Fortune and
Karima Davenport-White. Also, competing were freshmen
Chase Cineus and
Danielle Wooten.
The Eagles will be in action next on Saturday, October 11 for the Golden Ram Invitational, hosted by West Chester University.
