Jarrett Gentles Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals in 400m Hurdles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coppin State's Jarrett Gentles advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in the 400m hurdles with his first round time of 51.03 in the first round on Thursday morning at Hodges Stadium on the campus of University of North Florida. All running events were delayed for several hours due to rain and lightning in the area.
 
A senior from Newark, N.J., Gentles took fourth in his heat and moved on to the next round by clocking the third-fastest time among non-automatic qualifiers in the event.  Gentles' Quarterfinal race is set for Friday, May 30 at 7:25 pm and will air on ESPN+.
 
Also, competing for the Eagles at the NCAA East preliminaries were Carl Drakes, Jeff Hammond and Solomon Hammond.
 
Drakes finished 45th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.69, following Solomon Hammond's 31st place time of 10.45 late Wednesday night. Drakes scratched out of the 200m dash.
 
Jeff Hammond leaped 7.12m (23' 4.50") on his first attempted of the long jump to take 37th overall.
