Laila Lawrence and
Angel Jones have been named HBCU Division I First Team All-Americans, presented by BOXTOROW, it was announced by the organization on Thursday. Lawrence was also named the Co-Impact Player of the Year, sharing the award with Howard's Saniyah King.
This is the second-straight season that Lawrence earned First Team All-America honors from BOXTOROW. Jones is receiving All-America accolades for the first time.
Lawrence is tied for third in Division I in double doubles (21), leads the MEAC and is tied for 12th in the country in rebounds per game (10.5), and is second in the MEAC and tied for 25th in the country in steals per game (2.6). She is second in the MEAC in scoring (16.5) and fourth in blocked shots (1.5). She scored in double figures against nationally ranked Maryland, North Carolina; and against defending champion South Carolina, she scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Jones ranked fifth in the MEAC in scoring (14.8) and field goal percentage (43.1) while ranking third in the league in assists (3.6). In conference play, Jones put up 16.4 points and 4.5 assists to lead the Eagles, ranking fourth and second in the league, respectively. Jones, a junior from Woodbridge, Va., scored at least 20 points in eight games, including a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds at Norfolk State. She dished out at least five assists in ten games.
The dynamic duo led Coppin to its first postseason bid since 2009 as the Eagles (18-14) travel to play Colgate in the First Round of the WNIT at 6 pm on March 22.
