NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Andrew Betton finished second in the decathlon with a school-record 6,228 points while
Amiri Goode finished fifth with personal-record 5,591 points, completing the second day at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday afternoon.
Betton entered day two in the lead but was edged out in the final two events for first place. Goode edged Betton out in the 110m hurdles, 15.46 to 15.63 and the discus, 29.02m (95-2) to 28.44m (93-4) while Betton scored 603 points by clearing 3.95m (12' 11.5") in the pole vault. Goode tossed the javelin 41.38m (135' 9") for 462 points to Betton's 32.16m (105' 6") for 462 points and 330 points, respectively. Both finished the 1,500m in just over 4:50 for an identical 618 points.
Betton's 6,228 points shatters the old school-record held by
Brent Harry, who recorded 5,825 points at the 2005 MEAC Championships.
In the preliminaries of the short sprints,
Solomon Hammond and
Noxroy Wright advanced for Wednesday's final in the 100m dash while
Carl Drakes also qualified in the 400m dash.
Hammond won his heat of the 100m and had the top qualifying time in the field at 10.43 while Wright finished in 10.57.
Cole Schlotterbeck crossed the finish at 11.11.
Drakes had the top time of non-automatic qualifiers in the 400m dash at 47.25.
Alexander Dobson-Honablue finished in 52.03.
The trio of
Etiam Torgbenu, Asa Francis and
Jayeed Norbal went 1-2-3 in their heat of the 800m Run and all three qualified for tomorrow's final Norbal had the top time of the entire field in 1:52.56, followed by Francis in 1:54.15 and Norbal in 1:54.48.
Closing out the day,
Humed Nura finished fifth in the 3,000m Steeplechase in 10:45.32, the fourth-fastest time in CSU history.
Day Three of the MEAC Championships will start at 8:00 am on Wednesday, May 8 with the 5,000m Run.
