COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Three Eagles won events and the Coppin State men's track & field team swept the podium in the 400m dash in a wet and windy Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
Carl Drakes, from an outside lane, won the 400m dash in 48.18 and was followed closely by
Noxroy Wright in second (48.62) and
Asa Francis in third (49.21). Drakes' mark is the second-fastest time in the MEAC this season.
Coppin also got victories from
James Bell, who cleared 1.95m (6' 4.75") in the high jump, and
Amiri Goode in the 110m hurdles (15.54). Goode had a busy afternoon as he also threw the discus, 24.08m (79' 0") and the javelin, 36.32m (119' 2").
A trio of Eagles competed in the 1,500m with
Jayeed Norbal leading the way in 4:16.50.
Etiam Torgbenu was just behind in 4:17.70 while
Humed Nura finished in 4:22.63. Nura also competed in the 3,000 and finished in 9:32.03.
Also doubling up in various events was
Alexander Dobson-Honablue in the 200m (22.82) and javelin (40.29m; 132' 2") and decathlete
Andrew Betton who threw the shot put 9.69m (31' 9.5") and javelin, 33.40m (109' 7").
Daniel Cunningham also covered the 800m in 2:01.99 while
Cole Schlotterbeck clocked a 53.36 in 400m.
Coppin State will send selected athletes to the Texas Relays on March 27-30, as well as the Towson Invitational on March 29.
