Sam Nieves Named NEC Baseball Player of the Week

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's Sam Nieves was named the Northeast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.  This is Nieves' first weekly award as a member of the Eagles.
 
A senior catcher/outfielder from South Plainfield, N.J., Nieves led the Eagles with a .462 average as Coppin took two of three games from Merrimack to open NEC play. Nieves also posted a .533 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage for a 1.226 OPS. He tallied three hits apiece in the final two games of the series, including a double and a triple in the final game on Sunday. In game one of Friday's doubleheader, Nieves drove in the game-tying run.  He also totaled four RBI over the weekend while scoring three more.
 
For the season, Nieves is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with six runs and five RBI while drawing three walks, a sacrifice hit and a pair of steals.
 
Coppin State (3-6, 2-1 NEC) returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13 at Lehigh before heading to Wagner for a three-game conference series on March 15-17.
