Jones, Lawrence Repeat as MEAC Player & Defensive Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Angel Jones and Laila Lawrence have repeated as the MEAC Women's Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It's the second weekly award of the season for Jones and third for Lawrence.
 
A junior from Woodbridge, Va., Jones averaged 19.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals during a 2-1 week for the Eagles. In a narrow 63-61 win over NJIT, Jones led the team with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. She followed with another standout performance in the 74-68 overtime victory against Arizona State, contributing 23 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal before leading all scorers with 12 points at 15th-ranked North Carolina.
 
For the season, Jones ranks third in the MEAC in scoring (16.0), fifth in assists (2.6) and sixth in field goal percentage (42.7). Jones leads the league with a 82.9 free throw percentage, hitting 29-of-35 from the stripe.
 
Lawrence averaged 16.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.6 steals, and 2.0 blocks during a 2-1 week for the Eagles. A senior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals in the 63-61 win over NJIT where she scored the game-winner as time expired. In the overtime victory against Arizona State, Lawrence finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, four steals and five assists. She finished off with her second double-double of the week, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to No. 15 UNC. 
 
This season, Lawrence leads the MEAC in rebounds (9.3) and double-doubles (7) which rank second nationally. Lawrence also sits second in the league in scoring (17.6) and steals (2.2), fourth in blocks (1.0) and fifth in assists (2.6).
