NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Angel Jones and
Laila Lawrence both collected MEAC Women's Basketball weekly awards for their performances at the UNF Thanksgiving Tournament over the weekend, it was announced by the league office on Monday night. Jones shared Player of the Week honors while Lawrence received Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Jones averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists as the Eagles split a pair of games at North Florida. She shot 57 percent from beyond the three-point arch and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. A junior from Woodbridge, Va., Jones led Coppin with a career-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists in a win over the host Ospreys. Jones followed with 15 points and three rebounds against undefeated Stephen F. Austin the next day.
Lawrence posted a pair of double-doubles and averaged 18.0 points with 12.0 rebounds to go with 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals last week. A senior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence put up 19 points and 11 rebounds against North Florida to go with seven assists and two steals. Lawrence followed with a 17-point, 13-rebound effort against the Lady Jacks.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, November 3 at NJIT before hosting Arizona State on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. Both games will air on ESPN+.
