Laila Lawrence Named MEAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Laila Lawrence has been named the MEAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the first weekly award for Lawrence this season and the second time during her CSU tenure that she received Player of the Week accolades.
 
A senior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence averaged 19.7 points and 7.0 rebounds to go with six assists, three steals and two blocks.  Lawrence shot 45.8% from the floor, 6-of-13 (46.2%) from deep and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the line as the Eagles went 1-2 last week.
 
Lawrence opened the week with 19 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks in just 24 minutes as Coppin routed Saint Francis.  She followed up with a 20-point, seven rebound effort against defending National Champions and top-ranked South Carolina where she buried a career-high four 3-pointers and dished out three assists. Two days later, Lawrence recorded another 20 point game at Virginia Tech while adding two assists and two steals.
 
Through five games this season, Lawrence is averaging a league-high 18.8 points and 7.6 rebounds, ranking 5th in the conference, to go with 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.8 blocks.  Lawrence hit 43.2 percent from the field and 38.9% from 3-point range.
 
The Eagles return to action on November 24 for a 2 pm tipoff at Sacred Heart on ESPN+.
