COLUMBIA, S.C. – Solomon Hammond, Jarrett Gentles and
Carl Drakes won open events, and the duo of Drakes and Gentles led the 4x400m Relay to a victory as the Coppin State men's track & field team had an impressive showing at South Carolina's Carolina Challenge this weekend.
Hammond posted a 6.67 to win the 60m dash in the second fastest time in school history and the 27
th fastest time in the Nation this season. His time is just between former Olympians
Joseph Manu (6.66) and
Joseph Amoah (6.68).
Drakes won the 400m Invite in 47.91, followed by
Noxroy Wright in third in 48.52 while Gentles won the college division race in 48.47.
Drakes and Gentles ran the second and anchor legs of the 4x400, respectively, along with Wright and
Rashaun Stewart, who won in a MEAC season-best time of 3:11.47, which ranks 35
th nationally. The 'B' relay of
Etiam Torgbenu,
Asa Francis,
Jayeed Norbal and
Alexander Dobson-Honablue took sixth in 3:17.66.
Stewart led a large group of Eagles in the 200m dash, taking sixth in 21.98, just ahead of
Cole Schlotterbeck in 22.00.
Anthony Harris finished in 22.76, followed by Dobson-Honablue in 22.86. Schlotterbeck narrowly beat out Stewart in the 60m dash, 7.13 to 7.14. Harris also clocked an 8.63 in the 60m hurdles.
Coppin went 3-4-5 in the 1,000m Run with Francis leading the way in 2:29.20. Next was Torgbenu in 2:32.05 and Norbal in 2:33.66.
Freshman
Humed Nura made his debut in the 5,000m and clocked the third-fastest time in CSU indoor history in 16:08.56.
In the high jump,
Andrew Betton cleared 5' 11.25."
Coppin returns to the track next weekend at the Penn State National Open on January 26-27.
