TOWSON, Md. – Solomon Hammond won both the 100m and 20m dash while
Carl Drakes and
James Bell also won individual events as the Coppin State men's track & field team competed at the Towson Spring Open this weekend at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Battling tough winds and a wet surface over the two-day meet, Hammond clocked a 10.51 in the 100m dash and a 21.72 in the 200m dash to take both events. His time in the 100m dash is the seventh-fastest in school history and the second-fastest in the MEAC this season.
Drakes blew out the competition in the 400m dash, finishing in 47.44 which was nearly two seconds faster than the next closest finisher. Drakes now sits second in the MEAC in the event and cracked the top ten in CSU history.
Bell cleared 6' 7.0" to win the high jump, a whole five inches higher than second place. He ranks second in the MEAC this season with his mark, and it's the third-best performance in CSU history. He also took ninth in the long jump, leaping 21' 8", and clocked a 23.32 in the 200m.
Both the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays were also victorious to open and close the day. With the rain just giving way, Drakes and Hammond ran the opening legs of the 4x1 before
Rashaun Stewart and
Cole Schlotterbeck closed en route to a winning time of 40.94. Stewart led off the 4x4 and was followed by
Myles Small, Amadou Ba and
Randy Serville, clocking a 3:15.34.
Ivan Wiggins-Ingram took second in the 400m hurdles in 54.21, shaving nearly a second and a half off his time from last weekend, and just missing a PR. He also clocked a 23.74 in the 200m dash.
Small also doubled up in the 100m (11.21) and 200m (22.45) while
Amiri Goode ran in the 100m (11.86), 200m (23.75), 110m hurdles (16.70) and anchored the 4x400 'B' Relay to a 3:28.94, following
Solomon Hammond, Wiggins-Ingram and Schlotterbeck.
Daniel Cunningham recorded a PR of 2:02.52 in the 800m Run while Serville finished the 1,500m Run in 4:29.55.
Anthony Harris ran a double of the 200m dash (22.65) and 400m hurdles (58.25). Elsewhere in the sprints,
Etiam Torgbenu finished the 200m dash in 22.66 while
Jeff Hammond and Schlotterbeck finished the 400m dash in 50.66 and 51.72, respectively.
Coppin is scheduled to compete at the South Florida Invitational on April 7-8 while select athletes will also run at the Howard Bison Invitational on Saturday.
