Alvarado, Esparza Receive MEAC Softball Weekly Awards for Season-Opening Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Brissa Alvarado has been named the MEAC Softball Player of the Week while Seryna Esparza received Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.  This is the first time that Alvarado has been named the conference Player of the Week after receiving two Rookie of the Week awards as a freshman in 2019.
 
A redshirt senior from Rialto, Calif., Alvarado hit a team-high .545 (6-for-11) in Coppin State's opening weekend, leading the eagles to a 2-2 mark with wins over Bryant and Towson. Alvarado went 3-for-4 in the season opening win over the Bulldogs, hitting one of her two doubles before adding two more hits against Bucknell later that day. She also drew a walk in the victory over the Tigers.
 
Esparza hit .417 for the weekend, notching five hits in 12 at-bats while driving in four runs and scoring three times. She hit a two-run home run and drew a walk in the win over Bryant, and against Towson, she went 3-for-4 with a run score, a double and an RBI.
 
The Eagles (2-2) return to action on Wednesday, March 8 for a 12 pm doubleheader at George Washington University which airs on ESPN+.
 
Two days later, Coppin will head to the LD&B Insurance Invitational, hosted by James Madison University. The Eagles open the three-day tournament with Fairleigh Dickinson and the host Dukes on Friday, followed by Saint Joseph's on Saturday and both FDU and Radford on Sunday.
