NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State women's basketball players
Colleen Bucknor and
Cortney Gardner have been named to the College Sports Communicators Women's Basketball Academic All-District Team, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first award that either have received an award from CSC, formerly known as CoSIDA, and both advance to the Academic All-America ballot with All-Americans announced in mid-March.
To be eligible award, the student-athlete must be a key starter or reserve, be of at least sophomore standing in the classroom, and maintain a 3.50 cumulative grade point average.
A redshirt sophomore from Miami, Fla., Bucknor leads the Eagles with 7.4 rebounds per game to rank third in the MEAC, while adding 5.8 points per game. Bucknor is also averaging nearly an assist per game to go with 13 steals and seven blocks. She has posted fur games with at least ten points, including a career-high 17 point effort in a win at Winthrop where she also pulled down eight rebounds. Bucknor notched a double-double at Old Dominion, tallying 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds which she matched the following week at William & Mary.
In her career, she is averaging 5.7 points and 6.8 rebounds to go with 32 blocks.
Gardner has stepped up this season, upping her production to 3.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists while adding 15 steals. A sophomore from McDonough, Ga., Gardner has had three gams with nine points, which included a seven-rebound performance at Howard where she added two assists and two steals. Gardner also dished out four assists against South Carolina State and was credited with four steals in a win over Delaware State.
The Eagles are set to make up their game at Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, February 22 in a 5:30 pm tipoff. Coppin also hosts the Hawks on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 pm.
