NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Brissa Alvarado and
Avianna Peterson were named to the Preseason All-MEAC Softball Second Team, it was announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the Eagles were picked sixth in the Predicted Order of Finish. All eight head coaches and sports information directors participated in the voting.
Alvarado was a Third Team All-MEAC selection at second base following the 2022 season after hitting .411 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 21 RBI in conference games. A redshirt senior from Rialto, Calif., Alvarado led the MEAC in walks (18), ranked second in OPS (1.295), third in on-base percentage (.545), fourth in slugging (.750) and seventh in hitting in those games.
Alvarado's 34 walks last season shattered a CSU single-season record and her 61 career bases on balls is tops on the Coppin all-time list. She also ranks fifth in batting average (.322) and ninth in doubles (20).
In her first season at Coppin after transferring from Niagara, Peterson received Third Team All-MEAC honors, hitting .286 with seven doubles, a home run and ten RBI while leading the team with four steals. A senior from Niagara Falls, N.Y., Peterson was second to Alvarado with 18 walks and recorded seven multi-hit games. Peterson slugged her first career home run against Syracuse and had a pair of two-hit games against South Carolina State to help Coppin clinch a MEAC Tournament berth.
The Eagles open the season at Towson's DeMarini Tiger Clash on March 4-5 where they take on Bucknell and Bryant on Saturday, followed by the Bison and host Tigers the following day.
