BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games to Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex. The Eagles (1-15, 0-8 MEAC) fell in game one, 5-3, before dropping the nightcap to the Hornets (10-15, 3-5 MEAC), 9-0 in five innings.
Game 1: Delaware State def. Coppin State, 5-3
Brooklyn Tapusoa went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while
Camaren Corbett and
Emily Quintero also drove in runs. Quintero pitched 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four.
Delaware State got on the board first with a run in the second before Coppin took the lead with a two-run third inning. Tapusoa led off the inning with a single and stole second before Corbett found the gap in right center for a double and tying the score at one. Two batters later, Quintero traded spots with Corbett for an RBI but was stranded at third.
Tapusoa drove in an insurance run in the fourth, bringing home
Brooklyn Lee-Scott from second after she walked and stole second with two outs.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth before the Hornets erupted for four runs in the seventh.
Tatjana Harris relieved Quintero and walked the two batters she faced before Quintero quickly re-entered the circle. After a sac bunt put two into scoring position, DSU tied the score with a two-run single before tallying three more base hits to take a 5-3 lead.
Tapusoa reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hornets ended the game with a double play ball.
Game 2: Delaware State def. Coppin State, 9-0
Giselle Ulloa and
Brooklyn Lee-Scott had the only base hits for the Eagles in game two while
Debra Hyde allowed three earned runs in the five-inning complete game.
The Hornets struck quickly for five runs over the first two innings before Hyde held them scoreless in both the third and fourth innings. DSU ended the game early with a four-run fifth inning thanks to a two-run home run and a throwing error which allowed two runs to score.
