TOWSON, Md. – Despite outhitting its local rival, Coppin State's softball team dropped a high-scoring affair at Towson, falling 10-6 to the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Eagles fell to 2-17 overall while Towson improve to 19-14 on the year.
Aniyah Haley had three base hits while
Julianna Mejia, Leslie Sereno and
Cameran Corbett also had multi-hit games. Mejia and Sereno both scored two runs while Mejia doubled twice and Sereno drove in a pair.
Emily Quintero threw a complete game for the Eagles, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings.
After Towson got out to an early 3-0 lead, Coppin tied it up with a three-run second inning. Mejia led off the frame with a double to right field before advancing to third on an error. She came around to score the team's first run as Sereno took an outside pitch to right for a single as well. After advancing on a wild pitch, she scored on a double by
Yasmin Burrell, and following a single by Corbett, the freshman duo converted on a successful double steal for the final run of the inning.
It didn't stay a tied score for long, however, as Towson responded with two runs in its half of the second, two more in the third and three in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead.
Facing a possible run-rule in the eye, the Eagles erupted for another three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to four.
Brooklyn Tapusoa reached on an error with two outs and scored all the way from first following a double to center by Mejia. Mejia scored on an RBI single by Sereno, who then scored as
Xzylia Maravilla also reached on a defensive miscue.
Quintero held the Tigers scoreless over the final two innings, but Coppin failed to capitalize, grounding into an inning-ending double play in the sixth and going down in order in the seventh.
The Eagles return to action on April 3-4 for a three-game MEAC series at Maryland Eastern Shore. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 pm followed by a 12 pm single game on Saturday. Fans can watch the series live via UMES' YouTube page by
