Bowling Finishes Seventh at James Brown Invitational

TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's bowling team finished seventh of 11 schools at the James Brown Invitational, hosted by Morgan State at AMF Towson Lanes this past weekend. The Eagles went 5-6 overall, tallying 10,988 total pins for an 180.1 average per game.
 
The Eagles opened the tournament with four baker style victories with wins over #19 Medaille (942-884) and #24 Morgan State (932-848).  Coppin also defeated Alabama A&M, 891-776, and Fayetteville State, 884-848 on Friday with the lone loss coming to 10th-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Saturday's matches featured six traditional matches, and after a loss to Bryant to open the day, the Eagles were edged by St. Francis and #18 Mount St. Mary's by a combined 13 pins.  Coppin regrouped with a dominating victory over MEAC rival Howard, 893-736, before scoring 866 in a bye match.  CSU closed out the afternoon with a tough loss to 6th-ranked North Carolina A&T, 867-834.
 
Coppin battled Medaille to a six-game loss to open bracket play on Sunday before sweeping Fayetteville State, 4-0.
 
Logan Brown led Coppin in the individual standings, averaging a 186.50 as she played all six traditional matches.  This included a high of 211 against Howard while rolling a 193 against Bryant and North Carolina A&T. Brown led the way with a 19.49 average per frame and 87.1 overall fill percentage while converting on 85.7% of her makeable spares.
 
Xiani Carpenter, Kaylah Castillo, Elizabeth Stokley and Jalyne Myers all competed in four matches, all averaging over a 180.  Carpenter led the quartet with a 185.50, followed by Castillo (183.75), Stokley (180.75) and Myers (180.25). Carpenter's high of 207 came against Mount St. Mary's while Castillo rolled a CSU-high 223 against St. Francis.
 
Stokley was second to Brown with a 19.13 average per frame, followed by Janaye Monroe (18.46), Myers (18.27) and Castillo (18.13).
 
Temira White averaged a 174 over her two matches while TaVera Johnson finished with a 172 in four matches.
 
The Eagles are back in action on February 18-19 for MEAC Meet #2, hosted by North Carolina A&T at Triad Lanes in Greensboro, N.C.
