SMYRNA, Del. – Asa Francis and
Kimani Alphonse led the Coppin State men's and women's cross country teams at the MEAC Championships on Saturday at the DSU Outreach & Research Center. The men's squad finished seventh in the teams standings while the women placed eighth.
Francis covered the 8K (5-mile) course in a season-best time of 29:55.3 to finish 23
rd overall with freshman
Humed Nura clocking a 31:07.8.
Whisper Shikwa made his CSU debut and finished in 32:22.9, followed by
Jayeed Norbal in 34:25.9. Finishing fifth for Coppin was
Amiri Goode in 37:17.0.
Norfolk State easily won the team title with 18 points, which included the races' top four individuals. Coppin followed Howard and edged South Carolina State by one point.
Alphonse clocked a 24:34.3 in the 5K to place 42
nd overall to lead the women's team with the trio of
Kaelyn Woodrum, Brianna Benton and
Albright Bonsu came in back-to-back-to-back just six seconds apart.
Destinee Lewis rounded out Coppin's team by finishing 55
th overall.
Norfolk State also won the women's team championship with Maryland Eastern Shore besting the Eagles for seventh in the team standings.
