Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches to Open Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Coppin State's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to open the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday at Cassell Coliseum.  After falling, 3-0 to the Hokies, Coppin took the opening set from Old Dominion before the Monarchs took the next three.

Andrea Tsvetanova matched a school-record for aces in a four-set match, tallying seven winners on the night to go with 19 assists and seven digs.  Geraldyn Palacios led the Eagles with eight kills, followed by Miajavon Coleman with seven and Ammaarah Williams with five. Williams also added three blocks, ad did Yaniris Miller-Green while Palacios was credited with a pair.
 
Ashley Roman finished with a team-high 15 digs whereas Kennedy Beatty chipped in with six while producing two aces.
 
Coppin led from start to finish in the opening set, opening the match with three-straight point before pulling away with an 8-2 run after Old Dominion got on the board. The Monarchs slowly chipped away at the lead, cutting CSU's lead to as little as 24-21 before a service error gave the Eagles the opener.
 
The Monarchs pulled away in the second set, using an 8-0 run after a kill by Palacios tied the set at 4-4.  A 4-0 run by Coppin, which featured a pair of aces by Beatty and a block from Coleman and Williams got the Eagles to within, 13-9, but they never got closer.
 
Tsvetanova tallied two aces in the third set's first three points to give Coppin a 3-0 lead but a 5-0 run by the Monarchs gave them the outright lead and never looked back.
 
Coppin started the fourth set on a 7-0 run as Palacios recorded a pair of kills while Tsvetanova aced a pair. The Eagles held on to a large lead before a 10-2 ODU run tied the score at 17-17.  Old Dominion continued to push through with another five-straight to pull away with the win.

Miajavon Coleman and Yaniris Miller-Green tied for a team-high six kills while Ahzhi Coleman added four.  The younger Coleman also matched freshman Laila Ibrahim with three blocks while Ammaarah Williams finished with a pair.
 
Andrea Tsvetanova assisted on 11 kills while Ayanna Pharoah added eight as Ashley Roman was credited with ten digs.
 
Coppin got out to a 3-1 lead thanks to a kill from Miller-Green as well as a pair of Virginia Tech errors. An 11-0 Hokies run put the set out of reach and gave the hosts the lead.
 
Coleman put Coppin on her back to start the second set, recording a pair of early kills as well as an ace before Virginia Tech began to make a run.  The Eagles kept it close as a kill from Palacios before a block from Ibrahim and Ahzhi Coleman made it a 16-14 deficit. Four-straight Hokies points opened a six-point lead before another block from Ibrahim and Ahzhi Coleman and a kill from Miller-Green brought CSU back to within four.
 
The Eagles stayed with the Hokies for most of the third but Virginia Tech closed the match on a 4-1 run to win, 25-20.
