BALTIMORE – Coppin State head baseball coach
Sherman Reed has announced that
Sean Repay has been promoted to Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. Repay joined the Coppin State baseball program just prior to the 2022 season.
"We were very fortunate to have a coach of
Sean Repay's abilities and experience join our staff last season," said Reed. "He instantly got buy-in from our returning players which goes towards the respect and trust our pitching staff has for him. He's been a winner in every past assignment he's had, and I'm so happy that he was a part of last year's Championship season. We've just completed a spectacular 2022 recruiting class, with Sean playing a huge part in it, and I look forward to watching our pitching staff continue to flourish under his guidance."
This past season, Repay helped the Eagles to its first MEAC Championship in 22 year and its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. Repay helped the pitching staff lower its earned run average over two full runs in conference play while shattering a school-record for strikeouts as Coppin matched a school-record with 24 victories. On the basepaths, the Eagles stole nearly 90 bases more than the season prior, ranking in the top ten nationally in steals.
"I am honored to be promoted to Associate Head Baseball Coach at Coppin State University," said Repay. "I would like to thank Coach Reed for all his guidance, trust and friendship during my time her so far. I also want to thank Mr. (Derek) Carter, President (Anthony) Jenkins and the rest of the administration for their support. Our players are phenomenal people on and off the field and I'm privileged to be able to continue to work towards another championship with them."
Under Repay's tutelage, sophomore
Jordan Hamberg was the first CSU player to be named the MEAC Pitcher of the Year while going 6-3 to go with a school-record 87 strikeouts.
Tyler Nichol and
Rashad Ruff also increased their strikeout numbers immensely while freshman
Justin Johnson set a CSU record for fewest hits allowed and received First Team All-MEAC accolades as a reliever.
Repay came to Coppin after spending the 2021 season as the Head Baseball Coach at Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont. In his one season with the Buccaneers, Repay led the program to its most successful year in school history. DCC finished with a 28-23 record (a 27-win improvement from the 2020 season), participated in its first NJCAA Regional Tournament in 17 years, and won the most overall and conference games in school history. Repay coached four All-Conference players, two of whom received All-Region accolades.
With over ten years of coaching experience, Repay has worked at every level of collegiate baseball and has extensive experience working in professional baseball, top collegiate summer leagues, high school, academies and scouting. Some of his stops include Dominican College (N.Y.), University of Antelope Valley (Calif.), Lakeland University (Wisc.), Indiana University Southeast, University of Toledo and Dawson Community College. Overall, over 80 of Repay's ex-players have gone on to play in professional baseball, including three who are currently playing in the MLB.
For four summers, Repay was the head coach for the Bismarck Larks (2017-2019) and the Minnesota Mud Puppies (2021) in the Northwoods League, the number-two rated collegiate summer league in the country. In his three seasons with the Larks, Repay won 100 games and a North Division Championship, the first in franchise history. He has seen over 20 of his players from the Larks get selected in the MLB Draft and another 30 go on to play independent professional baseball.
In addition, Repay coached in professional baseball for three years, spending the 2014 season as the Field Manager for the Bisbee Blue of the Pecos League, 2015 as a pitching coach for the Gary Southshore RailCats, and 2016 as the pitching coach for the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League.
Repay graduated from Loras College in 2008. He resides with his wife, Hope and three kids in Abingdon, Md.
