GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coppin State's volleyball team got double-doubles from
Miajavon Coleman and
Andrea Tsvetanova in a 3-2 (25-12, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 16-14) season-opening victory at North Carolina A&T on Friday night at Moore Gymnasium.
Inside the Numbers
- Miajavon Coleman led all players with 18 kills while adding ten digs for a double-double.
- Andrea Tsvetanova also notched a double-double with 51 assists and 17 digs to go with three aces.
- Ammaarah Williams was one of four Eagles players with double-digit kills as she added 11 kills on .320 hitting along with a team-high five blocks in her CSU debut.
- Hope Casel matched a career-high with ten kills while Yaniris Miller-Green and Geraldyn Palacios chipped in with ten kills and nine kills, respectively in their first matches with the Navy & Gold. Miller-Green finished just one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs.
- Ashley Roman was credited with a match-high 30 digs while Kennedy Beatty scooped eight more in her collegiate debut. Beatty matched Tsvetanova with a match-high three aces.
- Coppin outhit North Carolina A&T, .198 to .139 but the Aggies stayed in the match thanks to 22.0 total blocks.
How it Happened
First Set
- Miajavon Coleman had two early kills, helping Coppin to a 6-0 start before North Carolina A&T got on the board.
- After an Aggies timeout, Coppin went on another 9-3 run, highlighted by an ace off the hand of freshman Kennedy Beatty and kills from Coleman and Yaniris Miller-Green.
- A&T pulled to within 20-11 before Ammaarah Williams and Geraldyn Palacios threw down kills. Beatty added another ace before forcing an attack error to win the set.
- The Eagles hit a whopping .478 for the set with 13 kills on 23 attempts while holding the Aggies to a -.040 hitting percentage.
Second Set
- Coppin once again got out to a big early lead with Coleman recording three kills, leading the Eagles to an 8-3 advantage.
- The hosts battled back with five-straight points to tie the score and force a Coppin timeout.
- After trading points for the rest of the set, Palacios tallied back-to-back kills to give CSU a 24-22 lead.
- Following an Aggies block, a service error gave Coppin the 25-23 victory.
Third Set
- The Aggies held a narrow lead for much of the set before going on a 5-1 run late in the set to go on top, 22-17.
- Hope Casel kept the Eagles in it with a pair of kills down the stretch but an Eagles error helped seal the frame for A&T.
Fourth Set
- With the scored tied at 4-4, Coppin got kills from Casel, Coleman and Williams to help open an 11-5 advantage.
- The Aggies responded, tying the score at 12-12 and the teams played virtually even until A&T scored the final four points to force a fifth and deciding set.
Fifth Set
- North Carolina A&T scored the first two points of the set, but the Coppin veterans in Coleman and Williams answered with kills to tie the score.
- The score remained tied until the Eagles forced a pair of errors to take a 9-7 lead.
- Kills from Coleman, Casel and Miller-Green, along with a block from Williams and Andrea Tsvetanova kept Coppin on top by a pair of points.
- An Aggies error gave Coppin its first match-point at 14-11, but A&T scored three-straight points to tie the score at 14-14.
- Miller-Green closed the match with a pair of kills.
- CSU was once again dominant on the offensive side, recording ten kills on just 26 swings for a .308 percentage.
