NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Vanessa Carrizosa has been named the MEAC Softball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the first weekly honor for Carrizosa this season as she once earned Pitcher and Rookie of the Week honors last year on April 19.
A sophomore from Moreno Valley, Calif., Carrizosa pitched five scoreless innings in the Eagles' opening game victory over South Carolina State on Saturday. Carrizosa struck out a season-high eight batters while giving up just four hits in the win.
Carrizosa has been one of the top two-way players in the MEAC this season, leading the Eagles with a .311 batting average and nine doubles. She has struck out a team-high 63 batters in just under 100 innings of work while tossing eight complete games.
The Eagles will be the sixth seed in the MEAC Tournament, scheduled for May 11-14 in Norfolk, Va.
