TUCSON, Ariz. – Jordan Hamberg received national recognition for his performance on the mound last week as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper acknowledged him among its 11 honorees for National Players of the Week, powered by Diamond. It is believed to be the first time that a Coppin State baseball player was awarded a weekly honor by the Newspaper.
A sophomore from South Plainfield, N.J., Hamberg, who was named the MEAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, tossed a five-hit shutout in 2-0 victory over Norfolk State on Sunday. Hamberg struck out 13 batters in the performance as he retired ten-straight Spartans and 13 of the final 14 on the day.
For the season, Hamberg is 4-1 with a 2.93 earned run average on the mound while striking out 53 in 40.0 innings of work. Hamberg is also on the Watch List for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year and is hitting .338 with 20 runs scored, four home runs and 20 RBI while going a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts.
Coppin State (13-20) is currently in first place in the MEAC standings with a 9-7 record in league play and travels to Maryland Eastern Shore for a four-game conference series on April 14-16. Thursday's single game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 12 pm Friday doubleheader and a 12 pm single game on Saturday.
