Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at MEAC rival Howard on Saturday afternoon at Nationals Youth Academy. The Eagles dropped the opener, 12-0, before falling, 10-3 in the nightcap.
Alexis Genovese and
Brissa Alvarado both tripled in game two with Alvarado also driving in a run while drawing a walk.
Shawnee Ronyak gave up four earned runs in the start before giving way to
Vanessa Carrizosa who allowed just three earned runs over the next 4.1 innings.
Howard got on the board with three runs in the first inning before the Eagles scored in the second on an RBI single by Ronyak.
Isabella Zalba scored from second on the play after she singled to lead off the inning before advancing on a groundout.
CSU cut the deficit to just 4-3 with two more runs in the third as Genovese and Alvarado hit back-to-back triples before Alvarado scored on a wild pitch.
Carrizosa kept the Eagles in it as she held Howard scoreless over the next two innings, forcing double plays to end threats in both frames. Unfortunately, Coppin was unable to get over the hump as the Bison pulled away late in the game.
Coppin just generated three hits in game one, with Carrizosa recording a double and singles coming from Genovese and Zalba. Carrizosa also got the nod in the circle and gave up seven earned runs over the first 1.1 innings before
Maren Bernal was credited with one earned run in the final 2.2 innings.
Howard scored five in the first and six in the second to break the game open before tacking on another run in the fourth.
The Eagles' best chance to score came in the first inning as Carrizosa found the gap in the right center for a double but was held up at third on a single by Zalba. A groundout ended the frame with both runners left stranded.
The series finale between Coppin and Howard is set for Sunday, March 27 at 12 pm.
