COLUMBIA, S.C. – Coppin State's
Jeff Hamond won the long jump in school-record fashion at the Weems Baskin Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina at Cregger Track this weekend.
A sophomore from Kumasi, Ghana, Hammond leaped 7.80m (25' 7.25") in his second attempt to best an elite field. Hammond's mark currently ranks second in the Nation and bested Coppin's old school-record, held by Romaine Burke (24' 4.50") by nearly 15 inches, and is the third-best effort by a MEAC athlete over the last ten years.
Amadou Ba also medaled over the weekend, finishing third in the 800m with a time of 1:53.82.
Randy Serville followed shortly after in 1:55.85 to place seventh in the event.
Balvin Richards turned in a pair of impressive performances in the throws, tossing the discus 139 feet and the shot put 46' 5.25."
Amiri Goode and
Ivan Wiggins both competed in the 400m hurdles and finished in times of 57.82 and 58.50, respectively.
Bryce Pepukayi doubled up in the 100m (11.25) and 200m (23.14) while
Mauriel Carty clocked a 21.93 in the 200m dash. In the 400m dash,
Jervonne Agard turned in a 50.83, followed by
Joseph Manu in 52.41.
The Eagles return to the track on April 1-2 for the Towson Invitational.
