TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's bowling team finished eighth of 14 teams at the James Brown Invitational, held at AMF Towson Lanes this past weekend. The Eagles went 5-5 over the first two days, recording 8,742 total pins for a 174.8 average per game.
Tavera Johnson and
Kaylah Castillo led the way for Coppin individually, finishing 27
th and 28
th overall with averages of 188.40 and 188.20, respectively. Each had a pair of games where they rolled over a 200.
Logan Brown accumulated a 167.60 over five traditional matches while
Jalyne Myers tallied a 163.60.
Temira White put up a 175.00 in her four matches as she gave way to
Alexia Alston, who made her CSU debut with a 152 in her lone traditional match of the weekend.
Johnson's weekend featured high games of 224 in the win over Fayetteville as well as a 215 against The Mount. She also rolled a solid 180 against Chestnut Hill. Castillo opened traditional play with a 213 against St. Francis Brooklyn and a 206 against Chestnut Hill.
Castillo recorded an impressive 8.89 first ball average and had a 40 percent strike percentage while Johnson came up strong with a 23.75 average in the tenth frames of games. Johnson edged Castillo with an 18.83 average per frame to Castillo's 18.82.
Brown was consistent through her five matches, with all scores ranging from 159 to 176 while recording a 92.9% team-high single pin conversion. Myers closed out the Tournament with a high of 196 against Fayetteville State while White had scores of 190 against St. Francis Brooklyn, 193 against Chestnut Hill and 199 against Fayetteville. Also rolled a 152 against Felician.
Friday's matches featured Baker style play and Coppin picked up wins over Mount Aloysius to open the Tournament, as well as 11
th-ranked Duquesne. The Eagles routed Mount Aloysius, 878-692 before being edge by Kutztown. CSU also fell to St. Francis and Morgan State before upsetting the Dukes while going into the fifth game trailing by 19 pins before winning, 933-900.
The Eagles opened traditional play on Saturday with an 881-775 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn but dropped consecutive matches to #10 Mount St. Mary's and Felician. Coppin closed the day out strong, defeating Chestnut Hill, 920-828 and Fayetteville State, 972-756.
In Bracket style play on Sunday, Coppin dropped a Baker match to the Red Flash, 4-1 but responded in a big way, sweeping Kutztown, 4-0. The Eagles were able to take one game against the 16
th-ranked Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore to finish in eighth place.
CSU returns to the lanes on Feb. 19-20 at MEAC Meet #2, held at Pinboy's at the Beach in Virginia Beach, Va.
