BALTIMORE – Coppin State's bowling team won its own CSU Lady Eagles Invitational, recording 8,101 total pins for a 172.4 average this past weekend at AMF Woodlawn Lanes.
Kaylah Castillo won the individual title, averaging a 202.80 with 1,014 total pins which included a career-high 243 in a victory over Norfolk State.
The Eagles went 3-2 in traditional matches, defeating Wagner (913-788), Saint Anselm (858-633) and the Spartans (971-826) in three-straight matches. Coppin tied Bryant, 845-845, but fell in a tiebreaker before being edged by Bloomfield, 829-825.
CSU dropped a pair of Baker matches to Caldwell, 909-859, and Howard, 827-826, and entered bracket play as the top seed. Knocking out Kutztown, 4-1, the Eagles defeated Bloomfield, 4-3 in the Championship Match.
Individual champion, Castillo was joined in the top ten by freshman
Elizabeth Stokley who averaged a 176.00 with 880 pins. Castillo opened traditional play with a 196 against Wagner before rolling an impressive 234 vs. Saint Anselm and a 243 against the Spartans. She followed with a 193 against Bryant and closed the day with a 148 against Bloomfield.
Castillo averaged a 20.28 per frame with a 92.0% overall fill and a 8.94 average first ball. The graduate student from Orlando, Fla., had a 38.0% strike percentage and converted on 87.1% of her spare attempts.
Stokley finished ninth overall, rolling an opening 202 against Wagner while adding a 191 vs. NSU and 185 against St. Anselm. She led the squad with a 43.8% strike percentage.
Logan Brown competed in four matches, averaging a 177.50 with all four matches ranging between 173 against Bryant and 184 vs. Bloomfield.
Temira White (509 pins; 169.67),
Jalyne Myers (496 pins; 165.33) and
TaVera Johnson (476 pins, 158.67) all bowled in three matches with White rolling a 197 vs. Norfolk State to lead the trio.
Xiani Carpenter knocked down 186 pins against Bloomfield, averaging a 163.50 in a pair of matches.
The Eagles are off until February 10-12 for the James Brown Invitational, hosted by Morgan State at AMF Towson Lanes.
