Softball Falls in Back-to-Back Games at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of contests at Norfolk State on Friday afternoon as the Spartans won the opener, 10-3, before taking the nightcap, 9-1.  The Eagles are now 1-5 in the MEAC while NSU moves to 5-5.

Brissa Alvarado went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk in the opener while Alexis Genovese added a pair of hits, including a double.  Isabella Zalba also had a two-run home run and drew a walk.

Norfolk put a six spot on the board in the bottom of the first and added a run in both the second and third to take an 8-0 lead.  Sydney Dombrowski led off the fourth with a single, and after a flyout, Zalba put the Eagles on the board with a shot over the fence in right center.  Genovese followed up a double but was thrown out trying to score on a single by starting pitcher Vanessa Carrizosa.

The Spartans got one of the runs back in their half of the inning but Coppin put another run across in the fifth as Alvarado, who singled earlier in the frame, scored on a wild pitch to make it a 9-3 score.

Zalba and Alvarado reached safely in the next two innings, but Coppin was unable to capitalize as the hosts took the opener. Carrizosa was credited with the loss despite allowing just one earned run in her two innings.  Maren Bernal struck out four while giving up just two earned runs in the final 4.0 innings.

Norfolk scored eight runs over the first four innings of game two off Carrizosa before CSU got on the board in the fifth as Desiree Carrizosa tripled to lead off the inning before scoring on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-1.

Coppin held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the fifth but NSU closed it out with a run in the sixth.

The same two teams will meet on Saturday, April 3 for a 1 pm doubleheader in Norfolk.
