Weimann Connects for First Home Run While Softball Falls at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Ashley Weimann collected three hits with a home run and a double as Coppin State's softball team was defeated by Norfolk State in a pair of games on Saturday afternoon.  NSU took game one, 10-2, and the nightcap, 14-4.

A sophomore from Sheboygan, Wisc., Weimann went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored in the opener before connecting for her first home run as an Eagle in game two.  Weimann is in her first season at Coppin after playing the last two at Bryant & Stratton College.

In the nightcap, Brissa Alvarado led CSU with a two-hit effort as she also drove in a run and drew a walk.

Norfolk scored a run in the first inning of game one before going for nine runs in the second while Coppin put a runner across in the third on an RBI by Alexis Genovese. Weimann scored on the play after starting the frame with a leadoff double and getting to third on Maren Bernal's sac bunt.

Alvarado threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning and CSU was able to score just one run in the fifth as Weimann stole home as part of a double steal with Bernal.  Weimann also stole second base after recording a single and advancing to third on Bernal's bunt single.

The Spartans put 14 runs on the board in the first three innings of game two, but Coppin fought back with a pair of runs in the final two innings.  In the fourth, Weimann homered to center field to bring in Isabella Zalba. In the fifth, Alvarado drove in a run with an RBI single and later scored as Nia Bowe reached on an error.

Coppin heads to Towson for a single game on Wednesday, April 7 before hosting Bucknell in a 1 pm doubleheader on Sunday, April 11.
