PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at Drexel on Sunday afternoon at Drexel Softball Field. The Dragons won the opener, 15-0, before winning game two, 15-2.
The Eagles put a pair of runners on to start game one, but came up empty, before
Brissa Alvarado tossed a scoreless bottom half of the inning. Coppin went down in order in the second before an error helped Drexel take a 2-0 lead in the second.
Desiree Carrizosa and
Haley Bravo both singled in the third, but again, the Eagles were unable to capitalize. A pair of CSU miscues in the field led to nine Drexel runs in the Dragons' half of the frame, putting the game out of reach.
Sydney Dombrowski was one of the three Eagles players to record base hits while Bravo also drew a walk to reach safely twice in the game.
Only two of Alvarado's runs were earned as she allowed just four hits in 2.2 innings.
Maren Bernal allowed four runs in the final 1.1 innings.
After Drexel started the nightcap with a run in the bottom of the first, Alvarado drilled her first career home run to left field to tie the score at 1-1.
Back-to-back home runs by Drexel in the second made it a 5-1 score and the Dragons added five more in the third. Alvarado got one of the runs back in the fourth with an RBI triple which scored Bernal from second as she replaced Dombrowski as a pinch runner and got to second on a wild pitch.
Drexel scored five more runs in the fourth to seal the victory.
Alvarado finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, a home run and a triple while scoring a run. Bravo and
Isabella Zalba each singled and Dombrowski drew a free pass at the plate.
Vanessa Carrizosa took the loss after throwing 2.2 innings before giving way to
Shawnee Ronyak.
Coppin will travel to Mount St. Mary's for a 2 pm doubleheader on Tuesday, March 16.
