BALTIMORE – Alexis Genovese recorded three hits and a pair of RBI as Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games to Drexel on Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' home opener. The Dragons won the opener, 11-1, and the nightcap, 12-2.
Genovese went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in game one, driving in the team's lone run in the fifth inning with a single to left field which scored
Nia Bowe. Bowe also had a pair of hits in the opener while
Haley Bravo and
Brissa Alvarado had base knocks as well.
Drexel scored five runs in the opening inning of game one off
Vanessa Carrizosa who threw 3.0 innings and allowed four earned runs.
Shawnee Ronyak gave up five runs over the final 2.0 innings while striking out two.
Genovese doubled to lead off the game for the Eagles but was stranded in scoring position. Coppin also threatened to score in the fifth but had the final out recorded at third base after singles by Bravo and Alvarado.
The nightcap started just like the opener with the Dragons scoring five in the first, this time off
Maren Bernal with an error helping the cause. Drexel added four more in the second and another in the third before Carrizosa relieved Bernal on the rubber with two outs.
Carrizosa forced a groundout to end the inning and the Eagles put a run across in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI double by Genovese. Alvarado scored all the way from first on the two-baser after leading off the inning with a walk.
Two runs scored by Drexel in the fourth made it a 12-1 score and Coppin left the bases loaded in its half, wasting singles by Bravo,
Sydney Dombrowski and Alvarado.
Bernal re-entered the game in the circle for the fifth and got a 1-2-3 inning, but the Eagles went down in order in their final at bat.
Six of Bernal's runs were earned over 3.2 innings while she fanned three fanned three batters. Carrizosa gave up two runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
