Coppin Men Hosts In-State Rivals Towson on Saturday

BALTIMORE – After seven straight road contest the Coppin State's men's basketball team is back in the PEC  Arena hosting in-state rivals Towson University tomorrow, December 11.
The game will be live streamed and televised through Next Level Sports.

Opening Tip
Since 1992, the Eagles will face the Tigers for the 13th time. Towson leads the all-time series 8-4. The two squads last met on December 20, 2020 and Towson won by five, 78-73. The Eagles last won on Dec.19, 2012, 64-61.

Jesse Zarzuela won the MEAC Player of the Week and Tyree Corbett won MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on December 7.

Last Time Out
Despite a strong first half, the Coppin State men's basketball team was unable to contain the Colonials falling 75-62 in the Smith Center. Jesse Zarzuela led the team with 19 points and a team-high four assists with seven rebounds and shot 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.  Tyree Corbett was the second leading scorer with a double-double of 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.  Nendah Tarke tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, and went 55.6% from the field.
 
Preseason Poll
Redshirt freshman Nendah Tarke and sophomore Kyle Cardaci were named to the Preseason
All-MEAC Teams. Tarke received first Team accolades while Cardaci earned second Team honors. The Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Poll.
 
Coppin Contributors
Tarke earned third Team All-MEAC honors and was the 2020-21 MEAC Rookie of the Year last season. Over the final six games, Tarke averaged 16.5 points along with 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
 
Cardaci was the top 3-point shooter in the MEAC a year ago, making 54 3-pointers while averaging 9.3 points. He made 40.3% from deep and increased that percentage to 44.9% in MEAC play.
 
Eagle Returners
Returning from last season are Nendah Tarke, the 2020-21 MEAC Rookie of the Year and a third Team All-Conference selection, as well as the league's top three-point shooter in Kyle Cardaci. Isaiah Gross is also back after appearing in 14 games last season following an injury plagued 2019-20 season. Reggie James missed all last season with an injury but played in 25 games for CSU during the 2019-20 season. Justin Steers last played in a game during the 2018-19 season where he averaged 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and had 25 blocks.
 
New to the Nest
Nine new faces join the Coppin State program with four NCAA Division I transfers (Sita Conteh, Tyree Corbett, Mike Hood & Nathaniel Stokes), four JUCO transfers (Remy Lemovou, Alex Rojas, Daniel Titus & Jesse Zarzuela) and true freshman Greg Spurlock.
 
Scouting Towson
The Tigers played No. 21/22 Ohio State on December 9 and loss 85-74. Towson outrebounded Ohio State 15-12. Jason Gibson led all players in the game with 19 points off 7-for-11 shooting, including 12 in the second half of play.  Cam Holden also had a strong second half, scoring 13 of his 16 points in that period. Terry Nolan Jr. notched a career-high in assists with 10, adding seven points and three steals.  Antonio Rizzuto put up 10 points and two steals.
 
The Tigers are led by Holden who averages 16.0 points followed by Nicolas Timberlake with 13.3. Holden also leads in rebounds (96) and steals (19). Charles Thompson leads in blocks (13).

The Eagles visit the City of Brotherly Love to play CAA opponent Drexel on Tuesday, December 14. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
