WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State volleyball advances to the semi-finals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament Friday night sweeping Norfolk State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-21).
With the victory, Coppin (16-11, 10-5 MEAC) set a new program record for most wins in the season.
Miajavon Coleman recorded a double-double 11 kills and 20 digs, while
Paola Caten tallied 11 kills and six digs.
Ahzhi Coleman also notched seven kills on the evening.
Chudear Tut recorded a season-high 10 kills on .400 hitting.
Defensively,
Ashley Roman had 15 digs with five assists and three aces. and
Andrea Tsvetanova led all players with 30 assists and four aces.
Set one began with Tsvetanova serving and Coppin opened on an 5-0 run. NSU answered back on a 4-0 run before
Ahzhi Coleman had a kill to get the ball back to the Eagles side. Another scoring run by the Eagles caused the Spartans to call timeout with the Eagles leading 11-7. The Spartans went on a 4-0 scoring run to lead 21-18 before a kill by
Miajavon Coleman tied the match again. Then, a kill by Caten and a block by Tut and
Hope Casel gave the Eagles a one-point lead. Coppin ended the set on a 3-2 scoring run to win the set 25-21.
CSU started on an 2-1 run in set two.
Ahzhi Coleman had a kill to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead, then a kill from
Kareemah Hopkins had a kill to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. An ace by Tsvetanova gave the Eagles an 10-8 lead. The Eagles went on a 6-0 scoring run and a kill by Tut gave the Eagles an 18-11 advantage.
An ace by Caten gave the Eagles a 21-12 lead, and 4-0 scoring run gave the Eagles a 25-12 win and led the match 2-0.
In set three the Spartans opened the set on an 5-0 scoring run before a kill by
Miajavon Coleman gave the Eagles their first point. A kill by
Ahzhi Coleman, an ace by Roman with another kill by Caten gave the Eagles a 3-0 scoring run. NSU went up 11-4, before a kill by Tut cut into their scoring run. Down 16-7,
Miajavon Coleman had back-to-back kills and
Ahzhi Coleman had back-to-back kills to make the score 17-11 and spark the momentum for the Eagles. Coppin then went on an 8-2 run to only trail by one, 21-20. The Eagles finished the set on a 5-0 scoring run to come-back and take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
The Eagles will face the number two seed Delaware State tomorrow, Nov. 20 inside Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
