WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was a hard-fought battle for the Coppin State Eagles but they fell to Delaware State 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 20-25,18-24) Saturday night in the semi-final round of the MEAC tournament in Burr Gymnasium.
The Eagles (16-12, 9-6 MEAC) finished the season with a record breaking most wins in program history.
Miajavon Coleman led the Eagles with 12 kills, while sister
Ahzhi Coleman finished with nine kills.
Paola Caten recorded nine kills with 14 digs and
Chudear Tut tallied six kills on .318 hitting. Caten also led the team in aces with five.
Defensively,
Ashley Roman finished with 11 digs and five assists, while
Aislynn Weaver notched eight.
Andrea Tsvetanova recorded 21 assists and six digs.
DSU scored first in set one before Coppin went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. DSU went on a 4-0 run to cut into the Eagles lead but Coppin State finished the set on a 6-3 run to win the set 25-21 and lead the match 1-0.
A back-and-forth set two had eight ties and after a kill by
Ahzhi Coleman brought the Eagles within one. DSU finished the set on a 6-2 scoring run to win the set 25-20 and even the match.
In set three, DSU was up 7-6 till a kill by Caten cut into the lead. Then,
Khala Cameron with the ace made the score 8-6. A huge block by Tut brought the Eagles within three (15-11). DSU went on an 10-0 scoring run to take the set 25-20 and lead the match 2-1.
DSU started set four on a 6-0 run before the Eagles scored five unanswered. The Hornets went up 18-12 and never looked back winning the set 25-19 and taking the match 3-1.
