Volleyball Falters at Norfolk State, 3-1

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Norfolk State (14-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-16) on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.  The Eagles now stand at 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC while the Spartans improve to 5-11 on the year with a 1-4 mark in league play.

Miajavon Coleman led Coppin with nine kills and was followed by Paola Caten with six and Sydney Hicks with five.  Hope Casel added four kills while Jordan Celestine, Ahzhi Coleman and Chudear Tut recorded three kills apiece.

At setter, Andrea Tsvetanova and Kareemah Hopkins split time with Tsvetanova recording 21 assists to Hopkins' ten.  Defensively, Ashley Roman recorded a team-high 11 digs while Miajavon Coleman tallied nine.  Celestine led CSU with a pair of blocks.

Norfolk State outhit Coppin, .256 to .075 as Paola Matos and Shonte Seale recorded 13 kills each.

The Eagles hit .214 in a first set victory as Miajavon Coleman tallied four kills on just five swings.  Coppin used an 11-3 scoring run midway through the set to pull away from the Spartans as Caten recorded three aces during the stretch.

With her nine kills, Miajavon Coleman passed Ariel Richard for second on CSU's all-time kills list and now has 1,226 in her career.  She needs 27 more kills to surpass Cindy Okpegbue's career record of 1,252 kills.

NSU led from nearly start to finish in the second set after recording an error in the opening rally.  The Spartans scored the next five points and continued that momentum to pull away. Kills from four different Eagles kept Coppin close early in the third set but Norfolk went on a 4-0 run and never looked back.  In the final set, the Spartans used a couple of mini-runs before going for five-straight points midway through to take the match.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday, October 10 when they host Howard at 1 pm.
