Coppin State Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Howard

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team defeated Howard University in five sets (18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 15-10) Sunday afternoon inside the PEC arena. The Eagles improve to 9-8 (3-2 MEAC) while Howard moves to 7-11 (3-2 MEAC).

Miajavon Coleman led the way for the Eagles with 18 kills and 14 digs for a double-double to go with two service aces. Chudear Tut had 13 kills, three blocks and lead the team in hitting (.444).

At setter, Andrea Tsvetanova had 39 assists while Ashley Roman led the defense with 23 digs. Paola Caten added ten digs with four blocks and had nine kills.

It was an evenly matched opening set, but Howard took the frame after going on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 18-14 lead. The Bison finished the set with four-straight points and a kill by Alex Smith set them up for set point.

Howard opened set two on another scoring run, taking a 4-0 lead before a kill by Miajavon Coleman sparked the Eagles. Coppin went on a pair of runs to tie the match at seven. Howard took a two-point lead, but the Eagles finished the set, outscoring the Bison 18-10 the rest of the way, and the set, 25-19 to tie the match.

The Bison opened the third set on a 3-0 run before the Eagles tied the match at 3-3. Back and forth points were exchanged before the Eagles went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 17-12 lead and never looked back. Coppin finished the set on a 3-0 scoring run and went ahead in the match 3-1.

The Eagles opened set four with a kill, but Howard tied it at 1-1. The Eagles went ahead 5-1 before a timeout by Howard changed the momentum. The Bison tied the match and later went on a 6-0 scoring run to take a commanding 17-11. They eventually won the set on a kill and a service ace.

DeMia Goddard opened the fifth set with an ace and the Eagles controlled the set from there on going on three different scoring runs to win the set 15-10 and take the match 3-2. Goddard also finished off the Bison with an ace for the win.

Coppin will host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Friday, October 15 inside the PEC Arena. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
