BALTIMORE – Coppin State's
Miajavon Coleman broke the school-record for career kills as the Eagles swept MEAC rival Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-0 (25-15, 28-26, 25-18) on Friday night at PEC Arena. With the win, Coppin improves to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the MEAC while the Hawks fall to 8-9 on the year with a 3-3 mark in league play.
A senior from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman recorded ten kills on the night to break Cindy Okpegbue's old mark of 1,252 kills. Coleman now has 1,254 kills which also puts her tenth in MEAC history.
Elsewhere on the offensive end,
Paola Caten recorded seven kills with four aces while coming up big on the defensive end with nine digs and a pair of blocks.
Ahzhi Coleman hit .500 for the match with six kills and a pair of blocks.
Jordan Celestine and
Andrea Tsvetanova added three kills apiece.
Tsvetanova notched a double-double as she was credited with 25 assists and ten digs, leading CSU to a .188 hitting percentage.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Ashley Roman finished with a match-high 15 digs while Tut had a team-high four blocks.
The Eagles scored the first five points to open the match, but UMES rallied to tie the score at ten.
Ahzhi Coleman recorded back-to-back kills, and after the teams traded points, Coppin pulled away with a 6-1 run with three-straight errors by the Hawks. The Eagles closed the frame with six-straight points which included a kill from
Miajavon Coleman and a pair of aces by Caten.
Coppin fell behind, 15-13 midway through the second set but scored five-straight points as Tut recorded a kill and a block, followed by another Caten ace. UMES tied it up at 19-19 before CSU went on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 23-19 lead. The Hawks responded with four-straight points to tie the score at 23-23 and the teams traded points until the set was all square at 26-26. Caten and
Miajavon Coleman sealed the set with consecutive kills.
Maryland Eastern Shore took an early 4-1 lead in the third set, but Coppin regrouped and went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead with a huge kill by Caten followed by another by Tsvetanova. The teams played virtually even until
Miajavon Coleman gave Coppin a 17-16 advantage with her ninth kill of the match to break the school-record for kills. The Eagles kept up the momentum and forced four-straight Hawks errors and
DeMia Goddard added an ace to give CSU a 22-16 lead. UMES pulled to within 23-18 but sealed the match on a kill from
Kareemah Hopkins and an ace by
Genesis Hernandez.
CSU will travel to face MEAC-leading Delaware State on Sunday, October 17 at 3 pm. The Hornets stand at 19-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference.
