Anthony Tarke has been named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday morning. Additionally,
Kenan Sarvan was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week for the third time.
A redshirt senior from Gaithersburg, Md., Tarke averaged 12.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals to help the Eagles to back-to-back wins over Norfolk State last weekend. Tarke's 19 rebounds all came on the defensive end of the floor as Coppin held the Spartans to 37.4 shooting in the two games.
In Saturday's win, Tarke finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals. Tarke notched a double-double on Sunday with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds along with five assists, two blocks and a steal.
Tarke currently leads the MEAC in total points (237, 15.8 ppg), rebounding (8.3), double-doubles (five), field goals made (83) steals (3.1) and blocks (1.7) while also ranking second in free throws made (55) to teammate
DeJuan Clayton, and minutes (35.1). Tarke also sits in the top ten in the conference in both field goal percentage (45.9%) and assists (3.3).
Sarvan averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds for the week which included a 14-point, nine rebounds performance in Saturday's win over NSU. Sarvan's nine rebounds is a season-high while his four 3-pointers match a season-high.
This season, Sarvan is averaging 7.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while ranking second on CSU with 26 3-pointers made. In conference play, the freshman from Heeze, Netherlands, has upped his production to 8.5 points and 4.7 rebounds while making 34.0% from 3-point range.
Coppin State (6-9, 5-1 MEAC) currently leads the MEAC North and hosts Morgan State on January 30-31 for back-to-back 3 pm tipoffs.
