Baseball Falls Behind Early and is Unable to Recover at UNC Asheville

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Coppin State's baseball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-2 loss to UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon at Moss Stadium on the campus of Gardner Webb University.

Inside the Numbers
  • Marcos Castillo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk to lead the Coppin State bats. Both of Castillo's base knocks went for extra bases, including a double and his team-leading third home run of the season.
  • Conner Walker, Corey Treyes, Isaiah Wilson and Toran Smith also had base hits for the Eagles while Justin Oakley drew a walk and Caden Walton was hit by a pitch.
  • Mike Dorcean got the start on the mound and allowed just one earned run over 3.0 innings.
  • Lawrence Noble took over in the fourth and threw 3.0 innings and gave up a pair of runs while striking out two.
  • Devyan Dyal gave up four runs in a third of an inning before Tim Ruffino finished the inning.
  • Nico Felber closed it out with a 1-2-3 eighth inning as he issued three groundball outs.
How it Happened
  • Marcos Castillo got a 1-out double in the first before being left stranded in scoring position and Mike Dorcean threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.
  • Corey Treyes singled to lead off the second but was part of a double play ball to short to end the inning.
  • A pair of defensive errors helped UNC Asheville score three runs in the second but Dorcean regrouped and retired the last four batters he faced, including a 1-2-3 third inning.
  • The Bulldogs put two on the board against Lawrence Noble in the fourth but the freshman fireballer got through the fifth and sixth unscathed and retired his last four batters.
  • During the top of the sixth, Coppin got on the board as Justin Oakley drew a 1-out walk before coming home on Castillo's two-run blast over the wall in left field to make it a 5-2 score.
  • Coppin got back-to-back singles from Isaiah Wilson and Toran Smith in the seventh, and after a pitching change, Treyes was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs escaped and blew the game open with four runs in the frame.
  • Conner Walker reached on a single in the eighth but was unable to score and Nico Felber retired the Bulldogs 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
  • The Eagles put one more on base in the ninth, but the Bulldogs got a groundball to end the game.
Up Next: Coppin is back in action on Tuesday, March 10 when it travels to UMBC for a 3 pm start. The following day, the Eagles will head to Mount St. Mary's for a 3 pm first pitch before a three-game series at Villanova on March 13-15.
