Baseball Doubled Up at UMBC, 4-2

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a 4-2 contest at crosstown rival UMBC on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.  The Eagles now stand at 3-9 on the season while the Retrievers move to 3-10.

Inside the Numbers
  • Marcos Castillo went 3-for-5 while Toran Smith had a pair of hits, including a double for the Eagles' only extra-base hit on the day, and scored a run.
  • Justin Banks and Justin Oakley also recorded base knocks while Banks also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. Oakley drove in a run, as did Caden Walton.
  • Giovanni Canales gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out four in 4.0 innings.  Rashad Ruff threw the next two innings and allowed just one hit, and Bradley Tuttle went the final two innings without allowing a hit and striking out three.
  • Coppin left 12 runners on base for the game and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
How it Happened
  • UMBC scored a run in each of the first two innings off Giovanni Canales while the Eagles left three runners on base during those frames.
  • Coppin also put a pair of runners on in the third but came up empty before UMBC added another run in the fourth to make it a 3-0 score.
  • CSU used an error, a hit batsman and a couple walks to get on the board in the fifth as Justin Oakley drew a free pass with the bases loaded to score a run.
  • Rashad Ruff relieved Canales with two on and nobody out in the fifth, and after allowing a sacrifice fly to his opening batter, got out of the inning without further damage.
  • Toran Smith led off the sixth with a double to the gap in left center, and after a wild pitch scored on Caden Walton's groundout to short. Corey Treyes later walked and Marcos Castillo singled, but both were left stranded.
  • Both teams left a runner on in the seventh and after Coppin went down 1-2-3 in the eighth, Bradley Tuttle struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom half.
  • Castillo singled to start the ninth and Conner Walker was hit by a pitch with one out to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but a double play ball ended the game.
Up Next: The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, March 11 when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for a 3 pm first pitch.
