EMMITSBURG, Md. – Marcos Castillo broke the school-record for career triples as the Coppin State's baseball team fell at Mount St. Mary's, 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Straw Family Stadium. The Mountaineers used eight different pitchers with seven relievers throwing one inning each.
Inside the Numbers
- Justin Banks and Marcos Castillo each had two hits for Coppin State who also got one other base hit from Eddie Javier, Jr. Javier and Banks also drove in runs while Banks and Castillo scored the team's only runs. Castillo also drew a pair of walks.
- Castillo's two-out triple in the seventh was the 12th three-base knock of his career. This breaks the tie with Ruffin Bell ('97) at the top of the Coppin State record book.
- Tim Ruffino allowed six runs and struck out a pair over 3.2 innings before Nico Felber gave up two earned runs over the next 2.0 innings. Corey Treyes was effective in relief, giving up just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
How it Happened
- Neither team scored over the first three innings despite both teams having chances. Coppin stranded three runners on base, including two in the third.
- The Eagles got on the board first with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Javier, Jr. Justin Banks scored on the long fly ball after singling to start the frame and getting to third as Matt Day and Caden Walton drew walks.
- Mount St. Mary's erupted for six runs on three hits and an error in its half to take a 6-1 lead.
- Banks drove in Marcos Castillo with a double in the fifth to cut the deficit, but the hosts got the run back in the bottom of the inning and they got three more in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead.
- Coppin could only muster a triple by Castillo and a hits batsman over the final three innings off The Mount's pitching committee.
Up Next: Coppin travels to face Villanova in a three-game series on March 13-15. Friday's game starts at 3 pm, followed by a 1 pm first pitch on Saturday and 12 on Sunday.
