STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Coppin State's men's 4x400m relay of
Abayie Opuni,
Joseph Amoah,
Malik John and
Randy Serville closed out the night with a narrow victory at the Albany Winter Classic on Friday night at Ocean Breeze Sports Complex.
The Eagles 'A' relay edged out Long Island University in a time of 3:14.11, just 26-hundredths of a second ahead of the Sharks. This time is currently the second-fastest in the MEAC this season. Coppin's 'B' relay of
Cheyenne Johnson,
Jervonne Agard,
Eryk Goode and
Ivan Wiggins-Ingram also were impressive, taking ninth of 37 schools in 3:24.18.
Five other Coppin athletes turned in top-five performances on the day with Serville taking second in the 500m dash in 1:04.32. Johnson was just behind in 1:04.67, good for fourth overall in the event, while Wiggins-Ingram finished in 1:07.09.
Aaron Lewis also medaled, taking the bronze in the 60m hurdles in 8.04, after running the top qualifying time in 7.97.
Also, in individual events, Opuni placed fifth overall, and first among college athletes in the 400m dash (49.29), while
Michael Scott took fifth in the long jump (23' 2.75").
Balvin Richards also tossed the shot put 14.75m to finish sixth overall.
Other notable times were turned in by Goode (51.56), Agard (52.28) and
Nku Henry (52.65) in the 400m dash.
CSU returns to the track on February 14-15 at the VMI Indoor Classic.
